6.6 Writing and Speaking
Writing
1. An informal letter
Write a letter (100–120 words) to a grandparent or an elder, telling them about a value or lesson they have taught you and how it has helped you. Use the proper informal letter format.
2. A paragraph
In about 100 words, explain Kurien’s idea that “the greatest failure is to waste one’s life.” Do you agree? Give one example of someone who used their life to help others.
3. Letter vs message
Write a short paragraph (80–100 words) comparing letters and mobile messages. Which do you find more meaningful, and why? Use at least two contrast connectors (but, although, whereas).
4. A short biography
Write a short profile (100 words) of Dr Verghese Kurien for your school magazine, covering who he was, what he achieved, and why he is remembered.
Format tip For an informal letter, remember the order: address and date, *Dear ___,* greeting, body in short paragraphs, a warm closing (With love / Yours affectionately), and your name. Keep the tone personal and sincere.
Speaking
Discuss
- “True reward comes from serving others, not from wealth or fame.” Do you agree? Debate both sides.
- What problems in your own community could be solved if people worked together, like the farmers of Amul?
Role-play
In pairs, act out a conversation between Kurien and a young person who wants to settle abroad for a comfortable life. Let Kurien gently explain why he made a different choice.
Speaking tip When you give advice in a role-play, avoid sounding preachy. Share a reason or a short story, as Kurien does, instead of just telling the other person what to do. People listen better to experience than to lectures.
