10.6 Writing and Speaking
Writing
1. A paragraph
In about 100 words, describe a plant, pet, or project you have nurtured over time. What did you do to care for it, what difficulties came up, and how did it grow or change?
2. The tree’s diary
Imagine you are the cherry tree. Write a short diary entry (80–100 words) describing one of the hardships you survived (the goat, the scythe, or the winter) and how you recovered.
3. A paragraph on growth
In about 100 words, explain how the cherry tree’s growth is like Rakesh’s own growing up. Give examples from the story.
4. A “how to” piece
Write a short set of instructions (about 80 words) titled “How to Grow a Plant from a Seed,” using sequence words (first, then, next, finally).
Writing tip When you write about something happening over time, use time expressions (one day, months later, by the next year) to guide your reader. They turn a list of events into a clear, flowing story.
Speaking
Discuss
- Why do you think Rakesh felt so proud of his cherry tree?
- “Patience is the most important quality in caring for living things.” Do you agree?
Role-play
In pairs, act out a conversation between Rakesh and his grandfather on the day the tree first blossoms. Show Rakesh’s excitement and Grandfather’s gentle wisdom.
Speaking tip When you describe something you love or are proud of, your real feeling comes through in your voice. Speak warmly and slow down on the details that matter most to you.
