Summary

The story is told by a crew member aboard a space station. One day, the narrator is astonished to hear a bird’s cheerful whistle in the weightless cabin — and finds a small yellow canary hanging in the air, almost motionless, like a hummingbird but with far less effort. The bird belongs to a big, good-natured crewman, Sven Olsen, who has secretly smuggled her up from Earth on the last ferry. He named her Claribel and brought her partly out of scientific curiosity — to see how a bird would fly with no weight at all. Claribel adapts beautifully to zero gravity and becomes a beloved companion to the whole crew.

One day, however, Claribel suddenly collapses and seems to faint. The crew soon realises why: the station’s air purifier has frozen and stopped working, so the air is slowly turning bad (poisonous) — and the single, very expensive alarm that should have warned them has failed to go off. Because Claribel, like the old miners’ canaries, is far more sensitive to bad air than humans, she reacted first. Her collapse warns the crew in time to fix the problem and save their lives. The tiny bird turns out to be the most reliable safety device on the whole station.

Explanation: how the story works

A charming oddity. At first, Claribel is simply a delight — a bird flying effortlessly in zero gravity, brought up by a curious crewman. Clarke uses gentle humour to make the space station feel real and human.

The hidden danger. The real tension is invisible: the air is quietly going bad. The frozen purifier and the failed alarm show that even costly, advanced technology can let us down at the worst moment.

The bird as warning. Claribel’s collapse is the “canary in a coal mine” moment. Her natural sensitivity detects the danger before any human or machine. What looked like a mere pet turns out to be a life-saver.

The quiet lesson. The story closes with the crew (and the reader) realising how much they owe to a small, “insignificant” creature. The grand machinery of space travel was saved by a tiny bird and the wisdom of nature.
